Buckles and Bows

Last week the Daily Telegraph carried this picture of Beryl Bainbridge's funeral. Black vestments! Lace!! Buckles on the priest's shoes!!!

I wonder what the reaction would be round here if I dressed like that for funerals?

  1. The Independent, in its coverage, posted a different scan of Fr Rowlands (widely and fondly known within the AC Community as "Granny" Rowlands, I am reliably informed) leading the coffin. He appears to be something of a quick-change artist.

  2. What's with the guy who's lost his trousers?

  3. Have only just noticed that a couple of the bearers are wearing brown shoes! Disgusting! Standards are slipping.

  4. You just reminded me of a long-forgotten comic monologue - heavy Lancashire accent - heard when I was about six, which kept returning to the sentence "Brown boots - I ask you. Fancy going to a funeral in brown boots."

  6. You mean you don't dress like that? Doesn't everyone?

  7. Oh my! The shoes with buckles are not visible in the other picture. They're the perfect finishing touch.

  8. Turns out (still too much time on my hands) that "Brahn boots" was also a Stanley Holloway number, tho' I heard it in the early 50's, before this was recorded, with a Lancashire accent at a Methodist church "do".

  10. Maybe come in use for SR to use at funerals, as appropriate, Mimi.
